Nothing Set in Concrete / Bernadette Keating

2013

Framed Giclée Prints (printed on Hahnemuhle Photorag paper), 55 x 38 cm including frame

These images form part of a larger body of work, a series of images of a re-imagined Ireland, which I completed in 2012 for an MA in Photojournalism & Documentary Photography from University of the Arts London.

Both of the built spaces shown here have been re-interpreted by the public. The empty car park at the former Dell manufacturing plant in Limerick, which closed in 2009 with the loss of 1,900 jobs, is now frequented by local dog walkers.

The circular concrete structure on Achill island, erected on commonage over one weekend in November 2011, was unauthorised and never fully realised. It has since become, amongst other things, a tourist destination and a site for political protest and temporary art installations.
